• 1980 dismissal without notice due to protests against Soviet invasion in Afghanistan
• Since 1968 member of several opposition groups in German Democratic Republic
• 1981 foundation of Pankower Friedenskreis (Pankow peace association)
• 1989 NEUES FORUM (New Forum); representative of NEUES FORUM at the Round Table assembly; participant in the negotiations on a draft constitution
