Urgent resolution on Azerbaijan: the case of Ilgar Mammadov

Aserbaidschan Lage KarteIn an urgent resolution the European Parliament criticized the desolate and deteriorating human rights situation in Azerbaijan in the eve of the presidental election in autumn 2013. Especially the case of opposition politician Ilgar Mammadov exemplifies how the opposition but also human rights activists and journalists are suppressed, hampered and brought illegally into the prison.

The European Parliament urged Azerbaijan as a member of the Eastern Partnership to release immediately Ilgar Mammadov and all other political prisoners and to comply with international human rights conventions which the country has committed in the framework of the OSCE and as a member of the Council of Europe.

A few months ago my collegue Ulrike Lunacek and me appealed a letter to the President and the Parliament of Azerbaijan to express our concerns aobut this and other prominent cases of human and civil rights violations and to urge the government to comply their international obligations.
