EU-Russia Pussy Riot detention concerns must be addressed by EU
Commenting on the hunger strike commenced by Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova on Monday, in protest at her detention conditions in Mordovia camp, Green MEP Werner Schulz, vice-chair of the EU-Russia parliamentary cooperation committee said: "The description of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova's detention conditions is appalling and the fact she saw no other recourse than go on hunger strike is a major indictment of the Russian authorities.
Sakharov Prize 2013: Russian Civil Society and Opposition Support Nomination of Mikhail Khodorkovsky
For this year's Sakharov Prize, the EU Parliament nominated at my suggestion the imprisoned vocal critic of the Kremlin Mikhail Khodorkovsky. His nomination for the Freedom of Thought Prize found broad support in the Russian civil society and opposition.
Eastern Europe and Russia EU must support European neigbours in face of Russian pressure
The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the Eastern Partnership, and the pressure these countries are facing from Russia. After the vote, Greens/EFA foreign affairs spokesperson Werner Schulz commented: "Russia is flexing its economic and military muscles with its bullyboy political tactics. In the face of this, the EU must urgently show solidarity and political commitment to our Eastern neighbours by strengthening economic ties and relationships in the region."

Human Rights in Russia Europe must be proactive and support civil society
The Human Rights Committee of the European Parliament held a hearing on Russia today with members of the band "Pussy Riot", William Browder and others. Chair of the Committee, Green MEP Barbara Lochbihler and the vice chair of the Parliamentary Committee on EU-Russia Cooperation, Green MEP Werner Schulz welcomed the speakers and were deeply concerned by their contributions. Urgent resolution on Azerbaijan: the case of Ilgar Mammadov
In an urgent resolution the European Parliament criticized the desolate and deteriorating human rights situation in Azerbaijan in the eve of the presidental election in autumn 2013. Especially the case of opposition politician Ilgar Mammadov exemplifies how the opposition but also human rights activists and journalists are suppressed, hampered and brought illegally into the prison.
