The Magnitsky case: European Parliament urges Council to impose sanctions in the Magnitsky case
At the last session of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the committee’s members once again turned to the case of the Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. In an initial discussion, the MEPs took up a report by MEP Kristiina Ojuland, which calls on the Council to move at last to adopt sanctions against Russian officials who share responsibility for the lawyer’s death.
Belarus: Human Rights Situation gets worse
In a urgency resolution at 5th of june 12 on the case of the journalist Andrzej Poczobut the European Parliament had again criticized the human rights situation in Belarus sharply.
Letter of Protest: Russia continues to pursue religious minorities
In the next few days the Russian Supreme Court will adjudicate if fundamental writings of Falun Gong should be banned or not in Russia. Several books that are among the major works of the Buddhist could fall under the articles of the recently extended Laws against extremism. This would exacerbate further the already difficult situation of the religious community. In recent years centers and even private homes of Falun Gong have been searched repeatedly, materials were confiscated and followers condemned with high fines and even imprisonment under the accusation of extremism.
Human rights court ruling on Luzenko ups pressure against political repression in Ukraine
The European Court of Human Rights today ruled that the arrest and imprisonment of former Ukrainian home affairs minister Juri Luzenko was arbitrary and politically-motivated. The Greens welcomed the ruling and called for the immediate release of Luzenko and other opposition politicians under politically-motivated detention.
Khimki discussion: No European involvement in corruption in Russia
On 26 June 2012, my Finish colleague Satu Hassi and I organized a discussion in the European Parliament about the confrontations associated with the construction of a motorway through Khimki Forest, a nature reserve and recreation area for Moscow. Civil-society protests against the controversial project have been the target of harassment and violence for years. Although the EU has distanced itself from the project, there are reasons to fear that the French company Vinci may be implicated in corruption in it.
Round Table Discussion about Chimki case: European Involvement in Corruption in Russia?
On 26th of June my colleagues Satu Hassi (Finland) und myself had organised a round table discussion in the European Parliament which main topic was the „European Involvement in Corruption in Russia“. My and my colleagues´ duty as representatives of the European Union is to make sure by all possible means that no EU money is used for dubious projects like this and that the eco-aktivists are protected against human rights violations.
