The European Court of Human Rights today ruled that the arrest and imprisonment of former Ukrainian home affairs minister Juri Luzenko was arbitrary and politically-motivated. The Greens welcomed the ruling and called for the immediate release of Luzenko and other opposition politicians under politically-motivated detention.

On 26 June 2012, my Finish colleague Satu Hassi and I organized a discussion in the European Parliament about the confrontations associated with the construction of a motorway through Khimki Forest, a nature reserve and recreation area for Moscow. Civil-society protests against the controversial project have been the target of harassment and violence for years. Although the EU has distanced itself from the project, there are reasons to fear that the French company Vinci may be implicated in corruption in it.

On 26th of June my colleagues Satu Hassi (Finland) und myself had organised a round table discussion in the European Parliament which main topic was the „European Involvement in Corruption in Russia“. My and my colleagues´ duty as representatives of the European Union is to make sure by all possible means that no EU money is used for dubious projects like this and that the eco-aktivists are protected against human rights violations.

Werner Schulz went to the soccer championship in Ukraine, where he also visited jailed opposition politician Yulia Tymoshenko - and drew public attention for her at a match. DW talked to him about it.
