"Russia: back to super power?"
Europe is historically more alert to Russian politics than the United States. And yet Putin has also increased his share of tough criticism in the EU. Werner Schulz, who initiated the European Parliament resolution which demanded a re-run of the latest Duma election said: “If Russia develops in a democratic way it might once more become a centre of gravitation. But if it tries to be a superpower again, in a way that traps other nations into dependency on it, that might be dangerous.”

Debate and resolution Ahead of the presidential election in Russia
Ahead of the presidential election in Russia, the EP will adopt a resolution outlining its concerns on wednesday, the 14 of february in Straßburg. Recent mass demonstrations have underlined the extent of opposition to presidential candidate Vladimir Putin and frustration with restrictions on democracy. The EP previously called for a re-run of last year's parliamentary election in Russia. The Greens believe the EU should call on Russia to immediately implement reforms necessary to ensure fair elections and condemn the deterioration in human rights and democracy, and crackdowns on the peaceful protests.
